Piece by Piece Fundraiser

The idea: Create a fundraiser that is easy to participate in, creates a buzz (a talking buzz, not  a “too many sugar packets” buzz) about adoption and Ethiopia, and keeps people reminded about our sweet daughter to be.

The plan:  Drawing from our logo, we loved the idea of people carrying a “piece” of Ethiopia around with them.  It could act as a talking point to tell others about the adoption, a reminder to pray, or just a snazzy outfit addition.  But in combination with that, we wanted our future daughter to know specific names of people who helped her arrive in our family.  And so....

The implementation (phase 1):  Two different 500 piece puzzles.  The first one is a gorgeous picture of the mountains in Dallol, Ethiopia.

Who even knew these beautiful mountains were in Ethiopia?

We’ve (and by “we” I mean a collection of friends and family, not just David and I) taken the pieces from it, added a pin back and a little heart, and made them into the perfect addition to your wardrobe (No worries guys, they’ll work for you too.  In fact, Elijah insists on wearing the “manly” ones).

Further implementation (phase 2):  So how will our daughter find out about the people who helped her arrive home?  Well, let’s talk about that second puzzle now.  This puzzle was created from a finger painting Elijah made of Africa (with only a little strategic cutting on my part).

Obviously my son is an artistic genius!

For each puzzle piece pin people purchase (try saying that 5 times fast), we will assemble a corresponding piece in this 500 piece puzzle that will eventually be mod-podged, framed, and hung in our daughter’s room.  And that’s not all folks!  On the back of those corresponding pieces, we will write your name!  So not only will she have a beautiful keepsake, but a tangible reminder of the multitude (the community) of people who cared enough to help get her here.

Synopsis (or how to participate in the “Piece by Piece” fundraiser):  First decide how many pins you want to purchase (personally, I think they look better in pairs).  They are $5 each, but higher offers will be accepted gladly.  Hand us/mail us/carrier pigeon us the money and we will hand you/mail you/carrier pigeon you your pins (Mail to: The Gross family, PO Box 87, Maugansville MD 21767).  For each pin you buy, one piece (with your name on the back) will be added to our daughter’s puzzle for her room.  We will post pictures of her puzzle being assembled on the blog, so you’ll have an idea of the progress.  (P.S.  Please tell your friends!  We need all the help we can get, so feel free to spread the word.  There will be a coinciding Facebook event that you can easily share with your posse -or- just link them to the blog.)

Does that explanation make any sense?  Well, I hope it does!  I had to read the “Idiot’s guide to Adoption Fundraising” like 8 times to get the lingo down correctly (just kidding, but maybe I’ll write that book after this is all over).  We appreciate your ability to see through my wordiness to the heart of the matter.  Bluntly put: Adoption isn’t cheap, but we don’t believe that should hold our family back!  This project will help us raise over $2000 to get a little person in need of love into a family desperate for her arrival.  And forget about political candidates, that’s a message Jesus can get behind!
